Guidance Statement from the Idlib Chamber of Agriculture on Fig Crop Protection in Northern Syria
The Idlib Chamber of Agriculture issued an urgent notice to fig farmers across northern Syria, particularly in the Jabal al-Zawiya region, emphasizing the need for regular inspections and close monitoring of orchards to protect the crop and ensure abundant production.
The Chamber explained that field visits detected indicators of four major pests and diseases: fig rust, which causes brown spots on leaves that turn dark; fig mosaic, characterized by interlocking pale green spots; mites, which cause slight leaf curling along with microscopic red insects; and the fig snail, a newly recorded pest in the area that requires immediate isolation and treatment of infected trees.
The Chamber urges farmers to immediately begin necessary spraying and control operations before the first half of June, which marks the usual start of the "Tattweeb" (fig caprification/ripening) stage. It emphasized that early intervention guarantees fruit safety and maintains high market value
