Amid the economic transformations taking place in Syria, the agricultural sector is emerging as a key driver of recovery and future growth. In this context, the head of the Damascus and Rural Damascus Chamber of Agriculture, Mohammad Jannan, emphasized that agriculture represents the core identity of the Syrian economy and should be prioritized in the coming phase.
He noted that agriculture is one of the most capable sectors in absorbing labor and achieving food security. He also highlighted that a large portion of Syria’s industrial activity depends on agricultural outputs, reinforcing the sector’s importance in supporting the national economy.
He stressed that lifting economic sanctions would mark a major turning point, enabling the import of modern technologies and agricultural mechanization, as well as facilitating financial and trade transactions. This, in turn, would boost exports, particularly to European markets that continue to show strong demand for Syrian products.
He added that Syrian soil possesses unique characteristics that give agricultural products distinct quality and taste, a competitive advantage that is difficult to replicate globally, enhancing the prospects of a strong return for agricultural exports.
Regarding the regulatory framework, he pointed out that current laws, some of which date back decades, no longer meet modern requirements. He called for legislative reforms to simplify procedures for farmers and exporters.
He also proposed the creation of an “agricultural registry” as an alternative to the commercial registry for producers, aiming to streamline procedures and unify administrative references, thus accelerating export processes and reducing costs.
He discussed the “From Producer to Consumer” initiative, which aims to reduce intermediaries and lower prices, noting efforts to expand it across different regions while continuing training and awareness programs to ensure product quality.
He concluded by expressing hope that 2026 will mark a new phase for the agricultural sector, with aspirations for it to become a key driver of the national economy, improve farmers’ living standards, and restore Syria’s position as a major agricultural producer
